What is an AC Evaporator Coil?
The evaporator coil is a crucial air conditioner component responsible for dehumidifying the air. It’s typically located inside the air handler or attached to the furnace within the indoor unit of a split system. Here’s how they work.
- Heat Exchange: The primary function of the evaporator coil is to facilitate the heat exchange process. Refrigerant enters the evaporator coil as a cold, low-pressure liquid. As warm air from the indoor space passes over the coil, the refrigerant absorbs the heat from the air and evaporates, turning it into a gas.
- Cooling the Air: The refrigerant absorbs heat and cools the air. This cooled air is blown through the ductwork and into the living spaces, lowering the indoor temperature.
- Dehumidification: In addition to cooling, the evaporator coil also dehumidifies the air. As warm, moist air passes over the cold coils, moisture from the air condenses on the surface of the coils and is collected in a drain pan. Then, it is directed out of the system via a condensate drain line.
